Zynga has released their Mafia Wars Toolbar. This is a Firefox only plugin that tracks your Mafia Wars health and other stats in real time.

I am not sure what my recommendation is for this until I have the time to take a look under the hood. I will be doing that this weekend.

They offer you a limited loot item for installing the thing, but it is not worth much.

UPDATE: Well, I had the chance to go through the code for the Mafia Wars Toolbar.

The good news is, that I could not find anything that raised any red flags. The toolbar pretty much just reads and parses a feed from Zynga that keeps tabs on the account that is currently logged in.

The only data that is gathered and transmitted is in the search function that they have with Conduit search. It just sends the search terms you type in and passes them to their search engine. I am not at all familiar with Conduit, so I have no recommendations for them.

The only thing I was not able to check was the code on Zynga's side of things. I have no idea if they track anything like the number of different accounts that log in using the same Toolbar instance. But at least they have nothing going on with it that tracks anything like Bookmarklets or other scripts you use.

So its usefulness is questionable as most people who play the game regularly have the game open and are already aware of their game state. Really all this is going to do for you is tell you if your energy pack is ready to use and if you are currently being attacked. The first might be useful, but the second is petty pointless as there really is nothing you can do if someone is attacking you.

Otherwise, the thing is hideously ugly and takes up too much room in your browser. So I would just ignore the toolbar and get the Utility Belt using the link below and call it a day.

I think its a another feature for tracking the users.Because it will show the info of your Mafia Wars Profile.If you have several Accounts (what is against the TOS of FB & MW) the toolbar will have to refresh your state......ultimately u r being tracked.......

All right. I extracted this toolbar extension, but it is very advanced javascript so I'm not very good reading it. Maybe someone more skilled can read it. I find out that this toolbar is made with a www.conduit.com toolbar service. As I searched user comments about this at least one user tells that it adds advertise to google search results. Maybe someone could dig up more dirt about it.
